Byron Acohido and Jon Swartz report in USA TODAY that 40% of all computers connected to the Internet are part of a botnet.

It’s a good bet that a significant percentage of these infected machines are running up-to-date AV suites, too. Traditional signature-based malware protection can’t keep up with the zero-day threats. As a result, there are a lot people navigating the Web with a false sense of security.
